A Vision of the Future

The INSTEROID is Hyundai’s latest attempt to blend functionality with style, bringing a vehicle that feels as at home in bustling city streets as it does in digital realms. Developed by Hyundai’s European design team in Rüsselsheim, Germany, this concept car builds on theHyundai INSTER, a highly successful EV since its global debut in June 2024,with strong sales in both Europe and Korea. The name INSTEROID combines the playful nature of “INSTER” with the dynamic energy of “STEROID,” reflecting the car’s bold character and futuristic styling.

INSTEROID integrates design elements from gaming culture, aiming to engage a new generation of potential customers. It challenges conventions and evokes emotions, redefining what a sporty electric vehicle can achieve. The vehicle interacts with the driver through striking visuals, unique lighting, and a distinctive driving sound.

“With INSTER, we've taken the small SUV image to a bold new place for the global audience. INSTER punches well above its weight with distinctive design and an interior that maximizes its potential in exciting, customer-centric ways. With INSTER, we're redefining what it means to drive a sub-compact EV.”

The Tech Behind the Design

Hyundai has ensured that the INSTEROID isn’t just about looks. Beneath its striking exterior lies a suite of advanced technology aimed at making EV ownership more seamless than ever:

  • High-capacity battery: Providing an extended range that competes with larger EVs.
  • Ultra-fast charging: Cutting down wait times dramatically with next-gen charging capabilities.
  • AI-driven cockpit: A driver interface that learns and adapts to user preferences.
  • Augmented reality HUD: Merging real-world navigation with digital overlays for a next-level driving experience.
  • Drift mode: A feature that enhances driving dynamics, providing a playful yet performance-focused experience.

Gamified Design and Sustainable Materials

Building on the INSTER’s charisma, the INSTEROID introduces sporty, gaming-inspired upgrades: a larger body, track-ready wheels, aggressive rear spoiler, and aerodynamic details like a diffuser and wheel arch intakes. Measuring 4,190 mm long, 2,040 mm wide (with mirrors), and 1,740 mm high, it commands presence.

Inside, the gamified cockpit features racing seats, a roll cage, and a custom display cluster for a fully immersive drive. Customizable controls and a unique, multisensory soundscape create a street-ready car with track-level energy.

Features like drift mode, the integrated Beat House sound system, and the Message Grid encourage playful interaction. The recurring Boost Icon adds a layer of personality, strengthening the emotional bond between car and driver.

A lightweight tubular frame boosts performance, while bold orange accents pop against the clean white exterior. A reflective racing livery and bold INSTEROID branding tie together motor sport flair and gaming edge.

Hyundai stays true to its sustainability goals with recycled 3D-effect fabrics and anew bio-based interior composite—eco-conscious materials that don’t compromise on style or durability.

The Big Question: Can You Drive One?

Hyundai has yet to reveal full production plans for the INSTEROID, but with its growing commitment to electrification, it’s only a matter of time before elements of this concept make their way into production models. One thing is clear: the future of EVs is looking bolder than ever.
