Ridesharing: A Colourful Way to Share your Travels

Germany and Switzerland are colourful when it comes to Ridesharing: from Hamburg to Berlin, from Leipzig to Cologne, in Zurich and also in smaller cities like Bielefeld or Gütersloh. Electric vehicles are taking over ridesharing mobility services. It’s all about the shared ride to reach your destination in a more sustainable way. Let’s take a closer look.
Berlkönig is a ridesharing service from local Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe together with Viavan in the German capital. The electric vans are very popular at night helping party crowds drive back to their homes.

Since 2018, on-demand service BerlKönig has been driving on the streets of Berlin. An innovative mobility service to Berlin's public transport system run by local mobility provider BVG and Viavan, the joint venture of Via from the US and Daimler.

At the beginning of January 2021, the Ruhrbahn in Essen launched Bussi, an on-demand shuttle that is offered to a core area around Essen city centre. Bussi drives five electrically powered London taxis with a golden yellow metallic paint job.

Isi is a ridesharing service in Cologne and bundles the journeys of all passengers travelling in the same direction. Isi relies on the fully electric LEVC taxis and started early 2021 for a four-year pilot phase in the city of Cologne.

MOIA launched Europe's largest electric ridesharing service in Hamburg, while being the ridesharing specialist within the VW Group. Starting in 2019, the electric fleet has then been gradually expanded to 500 vehicles in the North German city.

The on-demand service "Loop", which has been operating successfully since September 2020, complements the city of Münster’s buses. Loop uses the electric London Taxi LEVC, a fully electric vehicle, seating up to 5-6 people.

The subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn, Clevershuttle and ioki and the mobility service provider HEAG mobilo in Darmstadt started on-demand shuttles in late 2020. The name of this ridesharing service: HeinerLiner, the electric Vito the EV of choice.

Mobility provider Viavan and the City of Zurich launched a ridepooling service for an 18 months trial. Starting in 11/2020 with the name "Pikmi", further partners include the vehicle provider Mobility, which uses the cars for rental during daytime.

In Gütersloh, the mobility service "Shuttle - Holt dich ab" (Pick you up) operates public transport with two LEVC London Taxis and a Mercedes Sprinter. The name sounds a bit strange, but the service has been really well received in the city!
